As a freelance writer, Joan has written pieces large and small for a range of national magazines. For five years, she was contributing editor to New York Woman, a monthly magazine highlighting the writer’s voice. From 1987 to 1992 she wrote personal essays, performing arts previews and profiles of Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ruben Blades, Bill Irwin, Annabella Sciorra, Bessie Schönberg and others. As writer of her dance column, she featured performers and issues of downtown dance.
Later a contributing editor for New Woman, Joan had a column called New Thinking, where she explored current developments in spirituality and psychology. Her articles on education, psychology and the arts have also appeared in Self, Massage & Bodywork, New Age Journal and My Generation.
She continues to write about movement and the body.
